Our Story

Tough enough for salty days, soft enough for sandy naps — we're your go-to for surf trips, beach bumming, and golden hour wraps.

Reef Rags started with a longing. If you've ever travelled through Europe and lazed on the beach wrapped in one of those giant, gloriously thick towels — bold colours, wild patterns, the kind you actually want to be seen with — you'll know exactly what we mean. Back home in Australia, we kept searching for that same feeling and kept coming up empty. Striped towels. Thin Turkish towels. Sand-free towels that feel like drying yourself with a plastic bag. Beautiful, they were not.

So we went looking elsewhere, and found something even better.

The answer came from Indonesia, where a centuries-old craft called cap batik has been passed down through generations of makers. We fell in love with the process, the people, and the possibility of creating something that was genuinely beautiful and genuinely useful.

Made with care, by hand

Every Reef Rags towel is handcrafted by a small, talented team in Indonesia. Each piece brings together the best of both worlds: plush cotton terry on one side for drying off, and a hand-printed rayon sarong on the other for effortless beach style.

Our sarongs are made using cap batik — where copper stamps (pronounced "chop") press intricate wax designs onto soft rayon fabric before dyeing. It's a process that requires patience, precision, and a skilled pair of hands.

Here's how it works: beeswax and paraffin are heated, the patterned stamps are dipped in, then firmly pressed onto the fabric. This is repeated across the entire cloth, each impression carefully aligned with the last. The waxed fabric is then dyed — the wax resists the colour, protecting some areas while others absorb rich, deep tones. For multi-coloured designs, more wax is added between dye baths to build up the pattern layer by layer. Finally, the wax is boiled away to reveal the finished design.

No two are the same

That beautiful crackled effect you'll notice in every towel? It happens when the wax develops fine cracks during dyeing, letting small amounts of colour seep through and create delicate veining across the fabric. It's not a flaw — it's proof that your towel was made by hand, with heat and wax and someone paying close attention. It means no two Reef Rags towels are ever exactly alike.

Why it matters to us

Cap batik is a UNESCO-recognised tradition, and we feel genuinely privileged to work with makers who have practised this craft for generations. We chose it not just because it's beautiful, but because we believe the things you take to the beach should be made with as much care as the places you're going to enjoy.

When you pack a Reef Rags towel, you're taking a little piece of that story with you.
